St Martin was a knight turned monk who is known for his kindness to a beggar in the middle of a winter storm. He took his sword and sliced his cloak in half sharing it with the beggar saving his life.
Traditionally, children in Germany will make their lanterns and on the evening of St Martinstag walk them thru their neighborhood while singing songs.
At GSC, the kids has spent the week making their lanterns. We then invite the neighbors to the school for some lantern-making, craft activities and a bake sale. Around 5pm everyone lines up and off we go. This year we walked to the local high school and sang our songs there which made it easier to hear for all.
