Felix

An Elegy for Felix

by Jonathan Reinhardt on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 11:20am

felix

my nephew

b. 25 May 2011

d. 25 May 2011

i lost a child in the night

in the region of the summer stars

one moment

the news of him

was like moonlight in my arms

like looncry in my ears

and his heartbeat tangled

in ours

his mother said

his father said

it was a little boy and we named him felix

he was tiny and perfect

and then with a breath

he could not take

he slipped off

down the path to the river

and the giant of time

scooped him up onto his shoulders

and waded in

and into the silence

no laughter

and into the silence

no cry

they say sometimes

the cracks are very small

that remind us

that death does not control us

that we will be victorious

that life never ends

but i lost a child in the night

i saw the crack in the sky

when the gate opened

and he slipped in

and i thundered with the clap

and i treed with the rustle and the crack

and i winded and whistled with the moan and the roar

and stilled with the dark

and into the silence

no cry

and here i stand and i say

that felix means happiness

that starlight is his name

that life never ends
